A Special Hexie Quilt!

I couldn't wait to share this!!! I have a wonderful friend in the Atlanta area. She used to live here in Auburn, but moved about a year after we met. I miss her! She called this morning. She volunteers in a local thrift store sorting clothing one day per week. This week she spotted this quilt on the floor where the linens were being sorted. It was priced at $6.00! She knew the linens would be on sale for 50% off the next day. So she did what any smart shopper would do - she hid it in the back and purchased it the next day for $3.00!

She wanted to know if I want it. Uh, YES! Her son will bring it to me this weekend. I feel lucky!!! It's even hand quilted. What a treasure!

I had a great little helper this morning while I did some computer work.

Hope you all have a great rest of your day!

Fabric Acquisition!

A few days ago I had to run in the local quilt shop to buy a notion. Is that even possible? I mean, can someone go in a fabric store and come out with ONLY a notion? NOT ME! I came home with three yards of this lovely. I love the patterns. I love the colors.

Day 1 of Scout sitting went great! I introduced him to Cooper first. Cooper was very gentle and chased him around the house for an hour. Then Scout took a LONG nap. Next it was Mickey's turn. He did well, too. I haven't let Prince meet him yet - he's old and ornery, but I'll do that today. At this moment I have both Mickey and Scout in my lap while I get some work done.

Are you ready? The next issue of Hexie Love comes out TOMORROW!!!! I love this issue, and I think you will too!

A Pile of COLORFUL Hexagons! (...and puppy sitting!)

One of my good friends here in Auburn is making a drop dead gorgeous Grandmother's Flower Garden using Kaffe Fassett fabrics and batiks. Are you drooling as much as I am? This photo just makes me want to dance and sing (but, don't worry, I won't!)

Look at this sweet little face! Meet Scout! He was adopted from the Humane Society yesterday by Daughter 1 and our SIL. He's half lab and adorable!

And until our SIL is off for the summer from his teaching, Daughter 2 and I will tag team puppy sitting for him during the day. Daughter 2 has an exam this morning and then will take him for the afternoon.

He was just neutered yesterday. He has water soluble stitches and of course it's rainy here, so I have to keep that area dry. I love puppies!

And how is our crew adapting to him? Cooper is doing great!!! At this moment Scout is napping in a small crate and Cooper is napping right beside him. They had a great time playing chase around out big ottoman, so both are tired now.

The dachshunds are doing pretty well, but I'm putting them in their crate while I let Scout play. I don't want to overwhelm him on his first day here.

Back to the dogs....and hexies!

Morning Hexies

I love to stitch hexies early in the morning while I drink my coffee. Here's the latest little flower. I do love black and white with a bit of bold color.

Yesterday was one of those crazy busy days. But it was a good day! Lots of accomplishments. Today's list will be a bit shorter, thank goodness!

I had the pleasure of seeing Daughter 2 get inducted into Phi Kappa Phi last night. Daughter 1 was inducted years ago when she was a student at Auburn. My girls are SMART!

My doggies are having to spend a bit of time in their crates this morning - I'm expecting a repairman any minute. While he's here, I'll get some computer work done...and some hexies.

What are you working on today?

Hexies Around the House

If you follow Hexie Love on Facebook, then you have already seen my new hexie vase. I ADORE it! West Elm has similar vases, but they are more expensive. But my PHS (Personal Hexie Shopper) shopped these at Hobby Lobby and sent me a picture. Of course I went the next day to get one! Love, love, love!

Here is our stack-o-doxies in hubby's lap yesterday. I spent a good bit of the day thinking and doing research. I brought the Engineering side of my brain out to play. Oh, I have some cool hexie ideas brewing! Today I need to run out and buy a couple of things to experiment a bit.

My list today is WAY TOO long - many more than my usual 3 things. EEK! A few of the items are just phone calls though. I hope to get back to my regular walking schedule today. I think resting my foot for a couple of days did me some good. Though I DO need some new athletic shoes - that will probably help, too.

There are blue birds nesting in our little bird bottle again this year! I have a perfect view of them from my recliner. We also have little wrens in our blue bird house- haha! They beat the blue birds to it this year. There are doves and cardinals nesting somewhere around here, because they love hanging our on our back trellis. Yesterday I saw Canada geese and a blue heron fly over headed to the lake across the street. I love watching the birds from our windows!

Hope you have a happy hexie day!

Hexies and Doxie Ears

I finished the May BOM last night, complete with a doxie ear to help me. Love to have a doggy in my lap while I sew, and it's a good thing I do! There is almost always a doggy in my lap!

I hope you are having a nice, relaxing, hexie weekend! I spent most of Saturday morning doing house cleaning - not my favorite, but I turned up the music and got it done. Hubby was doing yard work at the same time.

Cooper and I have been doing LOTS of walking this week. By Friday evening one of my feet was swollen so I took the day off from our walk yesterday. I have a wonderful foot massager that I bought at a quilt show. I plugged it in and it has really helped. I think I'm up for a walk today and I'm sure both Cooper and Hubby will be too.

And there will be lots of hexie appliqué in my plans for later!

Make it a great day!!!

Hexie Love Sneaky Peaky!

Here is a small peak at one project you'll see in the next issue of Hexie Love, coming out NEXT WEEK! This is a fun one - I believe in living your passion. So if you LOVE hexies, you want to not only make them, you want to WEAR THEM! That's enough hints for now...

Last night we went to the baseball game - Auburn vs. Georgia. I took a baggy of hexies to baste, but the game was too exciting! We got home about 9 - not late at all. But this morning Hubby and I were both tired - guess we're showing our age a bit!

FYI, Geta Grama is selling some of her iconic hexie quilts, including the one on the cover of the first issue of Hexie Love. Check them out here. I would love to have one of these in my collection! Speaking of collections... in the past week I've added two antique hexie quilts to my collection. Actually, one is just a top, but it's in perfect condition and I plan to finish it. I'll show pictures soon. I have this friend who has become my PHS (Personal Hexie Shopper). When she spots a hexie quilt or hexie item for sale, she lets me know. And 9 times out of 10, I jump on it! Aren't I lucky?

Did you know that Mary Kerr has an exhibit of antique hexie quilts in Paducah this week? If you are there, check it out! Mary has a wonderful article on saving old hexie quilts in the new issue of Hexie Love.

Also new in Hexie Land... I'm looking into putting together kits for next year's Progressive Quilt in Hexie Love. I've already designed the quilt - it's gorgeous and it's wall to wall hexies - no appliqué. The kits would include all the fabric, precut into hexagons, and the papers for English Paper Piecing. I'd love to find out how many would have interest in a kit. FYI, the fussy cutting would all be done for you! Great time saver! Get right to the sewing.

I'll be talking to someone about the cost of laser cutting kits this afternoon- I'll see what kind of pricing I can get. If it all works out, I'll attend Quilt Market and purchase the fabrics at wholesale. I'm hoping to keep the kit prices as low as possible! Many of you have told me (on Facebook) that you'd need to see the pattern before deciding if you'd be interested in a kit. I can't show the entire quilt pattern, but I will show you a sneak peak:

Big and small hexies flowers meander across the top. It's a very free form design. I haven't added color to the pattern yet, but maybe you can get the idea?

So why am I planning so early? Well, if there's one thing I've learned about the magazine business, it's that you have to plan way ahead! That's why most magazines are working on their Christmas issue in July! :)

So let me know what you think about kits! Yay or Nay?

More Hexie Applique

Remember those samples pieces I made to take to Cleveland for QATV filming? It's time to finish these blocks, so I'm appliquéing like crazy! I should finish these this morning.

My list today includes a bit of magazine work, a bit of designing on EQ, and maybe some fabric cutting.

I decided that my next UFO project will be quilting a top that I finished a couple of years ago - it was the mystery quilt for my local guild, The Cotton Boll Quilt Guild. My plan is to quilt in the ditch and then do my favorite - Perle Cotton Hand Quilting. But first I need to baste the layers. Maybe I'll get the basting started today.

Here are more blossoms from our yard. It's so colorful now! And we have a pretty day, at least for now. I think some rain is headed in later, so I may get out an walk early.

Another UFO Finished!

Last night I put the final stitches into the binding of my version of Celtic Solstice. Since I left all the green out (as called for in Bonnie Hunter's directions), I'm calling it Auburn Solstice. I've been working on the binding a bit every evening. Don't you love the feeling of finishing a big project? This is my THIRD UFO finish for the year! I thought I'd be too busy with Hexie Love to work on, let along finish, UFO's. But by setting aside just an hour or so a day, it's amazing what I been able to accomplish.

I have the quilt on a bed here for now, but it will eventually live at the lake. The quilt on the wall is an art quilt I made years ago using lots of ugly neck ties.

This morning I finished stitching together the hexies for the May BOM. Then I prepared the motif for appliqué, AND I prepared a few more parts of Odyssey for appliqué. Guess what I'll be doing later today? :) I love appliqué!

We have another beautiful day today. The rain is coming back tomorrow for a few days. So I'd better get out for a walk while I can. Maybe later I'll decide which UFO is next up for completion - I still have several to pick from...

Hexie Day!

I'm stitching these babies together today! Happy colors!

If you follow Hexie Love Open Studio on Facebook, then you know that I've finished designing next year's progressive quilt for Hexie Love! It's going to be gorgeous!!!! The 2016 Progressive Quilt will be a wall-to-wall hexie quilt - no appliqué of hexies for this one. I'll be encouraging LOTS of fussy cutting!

Finally we have a gorgeous day today and I'm all smiles about that. Cooper and I just got back from a lovely walk with a friend. Walking goes so much faster with a friend, doesn't it? Especially when you are both quilters and the conversation is all about that wonderful subject...

I hope you have a wonderful day!

Hexie Quilt Wins HUGE Award!

We all know Linda White of Dear Prudence fame - she was featured in the current issue of Hexie Love. (If you haven't read this issue, go buy it now here!)

I got an email from her this morning - her quilt, Elenor Jean, (also featured in Hexie Love) won the big prize at the 2014 Australian National Quilt Show. Her award was sponsored by Bernina. You can read more about her experience on her blog here.

Go Linda! So proud of you!

Yesterday we had another rainy day. More is expected this afternoon, so I headed out to run errands this morning. Don't you hate to run errands in the rain? I do!

This afternoon I'll be doing some final corrections on the next issue of Hexie Love. One of my assistant editors told me yesterday how impressed she is with this issue. She commented on the photos, the cool graphics, and how my page design skills have improved with each issue! It made me smile - I think you'll love this issue.

It's the biggest issue yet at 40 pages! And no ads! I think my last book was only about 63 pages. It has more pictures than ever and lots of fun patterns and inspiration.

Don't forget, the coupon sale (15% off) on a subscription for Hexie Love will be over in a couple of days. This will probably be the last time you can get it at this love price!!!

Hexie love to everyone!

Surprise Yourself!

Surprise Yourself is the book written by Charlotte Angotti and Debbie Caffrey. This was the workshop I took yesterday. I wasn't sure what to expect - didn't know exactly what we'd be making. But I'm SO glad I took the class!

Charlotte had us begin by picking our own personal measurement to cut strips.  We made four patches first. Then we made these other units, basing our cutting on the nine patch. NO MATH! She made it so easy. And then we got to play on design walls, designing our own quilts using these units. You'd be surprised how many quilts in the universe contain these units.

Here are a couple of my favorites from Charlotte's quilts.

I haven't had a chance to play with my blocks yet. But I already have an idea to turn this into a hexie quilt....

I highly recommend her as a teacher for your guild. She and Debbie have also started a quilt retreat business together. Later this year the two of them plus Bonnie Hunter will have a retreat in Los Vegas - SOLD OUT. But there will be another next year in another location, I think with Karen Stone.

Mass Drop

Do you know about Mass Drop? I was telling some of my friends here about it and it was new to them. So I thought it might be new to you, too.

Mass Drop is a site that has flash sales of various items. There are a limited number of the item available and the more people who do buy it, the lower the price becomes. AND they often have wonderful quilty goodness for sale.

A couple of weeks ago I scored this box of 75 fat quarters of Free Spirit Denyse Schmidt Modern Solids. For a steal!!! This one sold out fast! I just love to look at it and pet it - I really hate to break up the box, but I know I will before long...

You can sign in at the site in order to receive all the emails about current sales.

We have had yucky weather all week. Rain (and lots of it) every single day. Today is the big A Day game (Spring football scrimmage), but I sure don't want to sit in the rain. So glad I'll be spending the with friends taking a class from Charlotte Angotti! Is there a better way to spend a rainy day? I have my bag of supplies packed and ready to go.

Charlotte Angotti!

Charlotte Angotti is in Auburn! She spoke at our guild meeting last night. What a HOOT! I felt like I'd been in the company of a stand up comedian instead of a professional quilter. She had us all laughing out loud!  Each quilt had a story - or a few stories - that were hilarious!

This quilt was pretty cool. Charlotte made it from fabric she was culling from her studio. She divided it into lights and darks, cut it up, and came out with this. I love a good scrappy quilt!

And during the meeting.... I basted all these hexies! Today they'll get sewn together - May BOM in progress!

I also need to pack up a sewing machine and some fabric - I'm taking a class from Charlotte tomorrow called Surprise Yourself.

I'm going to work on a new tab for the top of the blog that will include tips for subscribing to Hexie Love - hoping that will help some of you out there in Hexie Land!

And the Winners are...

The winner of Quick and Easy Hexie Quilts is Tena!
The winners of subscriptions to Hexie Love are Swedish Scrapper and Mary Lee. Mary Lee - you are a no reply blogger - you need to send me your email today or I'll have to draw another winner...

Thanks to all who entered!

I've gotten a few emails from quilters who are having some problems on the Joomag site. I do want to know if you have issues. BUT, please try clicking on the green help chat button on the Joomag site- they are very nice and helpful. They will be able to walk you through exactly what you need to do. Yes, I pay for this service, so please use it! But continue to keep me posted if you are having a specific problem. :)

This morning I knocked a UFO completely off my list! I'd made many parts and pieces of this charity quilt, but had never finished. It's now a quilt top, ready to hand off to another guild member for quilting. In our guild anyone who chooses can participate in making charity quilt by donating fabric, putting together a top, machine quilting, and/or binding. We have a guild meeting tonight - so my timing was perfect.

It's pouring rain today. And I'm staying put inside until guild. I think I'll baste some hexie now....

Whew!

The blog hop is officially over! Wasn't that fun?  We took a trip around the hexie world in just over a week! There are still prizes to giveaway though. Don't forget to leave a comment on yesterday's post for a chance to win.

Can I put my feet up and relax now? (Above I'm doing just that with hubby on our patio watching the Masters Sunday - I got eaten up by mosquitoes, but it was worth it!) Well, today I do have my feet up (in recliner), but I'm working on the next Hexie Love issue at the same time. Yes, I can do this in a recliner! Nice work if you can get it....

I only have a couple of more articles to go - laying out the pages, adding the links, adding the photos.
I will say that I'm getting faster and more efficient at this part. And for each issue I'm trying to learn new ways to make it look more attractive and fun. For this issue I've learned to crop photos into both hexagon and triangle shapes - really cool! I love to learn new things!

Here's a random quilt photo from MORE Quick and Easy Hexie Quilts - this one has been pinned a lot recently. It has LOTS of perle cotton hand quilting. The background is denim. Notice how the colors in the hexies flow. That was a fun one to make - lots of scraps here!

So what else was going on around here during the blog hop? Lots! A fun luncheon, a dental appointment, and a colonoscopy for me Friday. Yup, glad that test is over and with good results.
And you may remember I've been working for one hour per day on UFO's - so how's that coming along? Slow.... I've been too busy to do this for the past few weeks. My Bonnie Hunter Celtic Solstice has it's binding sewn on by machine. Still need to hand stitch it down.

I did make a list of other UFO's I want to work on soon - so maybe I get points for that? :)

Today's list includes a trip to the post office to ship a couple of things, and to work on Hexie Love. I want to have the issue ready for my assistant editor (Daughter 1) to check it over the weekend.

I'm giving away three separate prizes:

Two subscriptions to HEXIE LOVE (any country eligible)

All you have to do is leave a comment on THIS POST by 12 midnight CST on April 15! I'll announce the 3 winners on Thursday.

Hexagon Blog and Facebook Hop: Joan Shay!

Can you believe this is the next to last stop on the hop?! It's been a blast and still another day tomorrow!

Today I'm introducing you to Joan Shay, the queen of dimensional appliqué. Joan and I met in Cleveland - I had breakfast with both Joan Shay and Becky Campbell - we all wished we had more time together! They had to rush off for hair and makeup for filming so our time was limited. Since we are all three AQS authors, we had LOTS to talk about and lots of ideas to share. Fun!

Check out Joan's Facebook post here: https://www.facebook.com/joan.mooreshay

Also check out her site: www.petalplay.com

So did you have a nice weekend? I'm working hard on the next Hexie Love issue - it's going to be a fun one! We also took some long walks and watched the Masters golf tournament. I love designing the pages, but I'll have to admit, I'm anxious to get back to SEWING!

I need to replenish my 3/4" hexies for my next block of the month - May 1 will be here soon! And I need to get back to work play on Odyssey. I've noticed many of you have purchase issue 2 of Hexie Love, and I thank you for that, BUT don't forget:

The general instructions for Odyssey (the progressive quilt pattern for 2015) are in the first issue, including the fabric requirements and the directions for the center medallion.

Tomorrow we'll be ending the hop here and I'll be giving away MORE Quick and Easy Hexie Quilts and a year's subscription to Hexie Love.

Hexagon and Facebook Blog Hop: Victoria Findlay Wolfe!

And the hop continues with a modern quilting superstar! Victoria Findlay Wolfe! Find her post here.

I met Victoria through blogging years ago. But we have met in person at Houston a few times. She is TALL! Very TALL! And very TALENTED!

And yes, with her "made fabric", she makes hexagons! You know I do love hexies no matter how they are made!

Be sure to visit and explore all her books, etc. I just purchased her Double Wedding Ring book and I'm in love with it!

And now let me tell you about Hexie Love on Facebook - yes, we're there, too!

Facebook.com/hexielove

And there is also a Hexie Love page on Facebook for all of you to share your own hexie goodness, whether it be a block of the month, an idea, a favorite tool or fabric, or whatever your hexie heart desires. Here's that link. You'll have to ask permission to join the group, but don't worry - I'll accept you really fast! This group has been growing by leaps and bounds!

I hope you have a happy hexie weekend and don't forget to keep following along with the hop. There are still a few more days to go!

Hexagon Blog and Facebook Hop: Geta Grama!

So excited to have you all visit Geta Grama at her site today! She and I have a couple of things in common - she was an engineer and she's obsessed with hexies! Her fabulous quilt graced the cover of the premier edition of Hexie Love - if you have read her article in this issue, you should! Fascinating!

Geta really pushes the envelope with hexies - she does really unique pieces with them. I urge you to explore her site.

I got an interesting email from Linda Franz (yesterday's hop spot) this morning. She said that her link in her Yahoo group about the blog hop ended up in spam folders - "Hexie Love" was tagged as, well...inapproprate somehow - oh dear! And a little giggle!

I hope you're all enjoying the blog hop. I think it's good to explore other artists' blogs and work - don't you agree? I hope I'm introducing you to some new people and that you're getting to know familiar names a bit better.

I've been busy this week putting together the next issue of Hexie Love - always fun for me. I wish you all a HEXIE good day!

Hexagon Blog and Facebook Hop: Cheryl Sleboda!

Cheryl Sleboda from Muppin.com is up today. Find her blog here. I met Cheryl on the set of Quilting Arts TV a couple of years ago. She is sassy and sweet! She filmed bunches of segments for QATV. Cheryl works in the comic book industry by day. She brings her unique style to her art quilts, often using technology to bring them to life. And look at that cool t-shirt she's wearing - she designed it and you can buy one from her site.

In my quest this week to share more details for all those who are new to my blog and Hexie Love, today I'll talk about subscribing to the magazine. Do you see that big Hexie Love logo at the top of this page - where there is an orange line that says "loading"? That's where you click!

You'll be asked to sign up for a free account with Joomag (the software I use) in order to buy an issue or to subscribe. To subscribe, look way over to the left of the screen - it will say "subscribe" in small letters. Click there to subscribe.

To buy a single issue, there is a place to click at the top of the screen. Take your pick - easy peasy.

You can either read each magazine issue directly through the Joomag site OR you can click an icon to download a PDF file of the issue and read it when you're not even on-line. You can read it from iPads, etc., if you wish.

And now for my newest acquisition! One of my good friends alerted me to this little gem that I purchased through Ebay. It's made of tin and shaped like a hexagon! Each little compartment opens up to store little supplies. The pincushion in the middle has lost its stuffing and is beginning to rot. I think I'll refurbish that part. It needs new stuffing and new fabric on top.

Hexagon Blog and Facebook Hop: Linda Franz!

Welcome to day THREE of the hop! Today we're going to visit Linda Franz, the inventor of Inklingo, a process of printing shapes on your fabric with your own inkjet printer.

And yes, that means HEXIES!!!! Be sure to visit her site today and check out everything there!

As I've been doing along the way, I'm going to share a bit more info about me for those who are new here this week.

We all know that hexagon quilts can be time consuming and tedious. I think that's what many of us like about them! But because I want to make more than a few hexagon quilts in my lifetime, I love the look and process of making hexagon motifs and using appliqué (either hand or machine) to stitch them to a background fabric.

You'll see me do a lot of that around here! Below is a section of last year's hexie BOM quilt - I offered a free pattern each month here on the blog.

This year I'm doing it again with geometric hexie patterns. Look for this year's patterns under the tab at the top of the blog.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of traveling to Cleveland to film a segment of Quilting Arts TV with Susan Brubaker Knapp. What a blast! I'd filmed another segment a couple of years ago. Yes, I'm doing hexies on QATV! This most recent segment was all about the appliqué of hexagons - my favorite thing to do!

Hop on, hexie lovers!!!

More About Hexie Love...

In the midst of The Hexagon Blog and Facebook Hop, I thought I'd share a bit more about Hexie Love, THE digital magazine for hexagon quilt lovers.

Above is the second issue. featuring an article by Linda White of Dear Prudence fame, plus much more. There is a new issue coming out every two months - so the next one will come out on May 1, just weeks away.

How did I get the idea to start a magazine ALL BY MYSELF? Well, it happened a bit like this.

I was already a hexie book author (times 2) and an avid blogger. I decided to start a newsletter for my readers. Something fun and colorful and informative. I began working on it and it began to grow. It was going to be fabulous! But it grew and grew again. At this rate, I'd never finish it. All of a sudden it hit me. This is not a newsletter. This is a MAGAZINE! Picture a light bulb hovering over my head!

I mulled over that thought for a day or two. Then I announced to my husband, "I'm going to publish a magazine." Luckily he was in full support as he always is. I went over with him how much money we'd need to invest to make this happen and we agreed that we could do it financially.

So here I am with Hexie Love!

I do accept submissions, so if you have a small project or other hexie idea, please email me: julia@hexielove.com

I love to pull together each issue, designing the pages, selecting the photo, etc. It keep me very busy and I love every minute!

Hexie love,
Julia

The Hexagon Blog and Facebook Hop: Catherine Redford!

The hop continues! Today it's Catherine Redford!

Catherine lives just outside of Chicago. We became fast friends a couple of years ago when she and I were both filming episodes of Quilting Arts TV. She's an expert at so many quilty things from making bowls from scraps, African Folklore Embroidery, and yes, HEXIES! In fact, she's featured in a article in the first issue of Hexie Love. Here she is with her prize winning little hexie quilt - she won a first place ribbon in the inaugural Quilt Con!

As a reminder, Hexie Love comes out every other month. Two issues have been released and I'm working on the third now - it's going to be another great issue!

Hexie love,
Julia

The Blog Hop is Starting: Bonnie Hunter!

Welcome to the Hexagon Blog and Facebook Hop! We start with the infamous Bonnie Hunter at Quiltville. Of course she is the queen of scrappy piecing, but she also makes hexies! And she's graciously agreed to start off the HOP!

If you are new here, let me tell you a bit about myself. I am a former engineer and took up quilting after I stopped working to stay home with our two daughters. The daughters are now grown and I live with my husband and our three dogs in Auburn, AL. Several years ago my obsession with hexies began!

Two hexie books later, I decided to start a hexie digital magazine. I spent most of last year laying the groundwork - you know....incorporation, LOTS of business licenses, a logo, new software, and an accountant. The first issue of Hexie Love came out in January of this year. And I'm having a blast with it!

I am working with lots of famous hexie quilt artists who are writing fabulous articles. There are scrappy hexie patterns, book reviews, small projects and so much more.

Price: $5.99 for one issue. $26.99 for a one year subscription (6 issues).
